Fever in Children
Fever is high temperature.
As a general rule, in children, a temperature of over 37.5C (99.5F) is a fever.
As a parent, it can be extremely worrying if your child has a high temperature. However, it’s very common and often clears up by itself without treatment.
The easiest way to find out whether your child has a fever is to take their temperature using a thermometer. Always have one in your First Aid Kit.

In healthy kids, fevers don’t indicate anything serious.
Although it can be frightening when your child’s temperature rises, fever itself causes no harm and can actually be a good thing – it’s often the body’s way of fighting infections.
And not all fevers need to be treated.
High fever, however, can make a child uncomfortable and make problems (such as dehydration) worse.
When To Seek Urgent Medical Advice For A Fever
If your child:
- is under three months old and has a temperature of 38C (100.4F) or above
- is between three and six months old and has a temperature of 39C (102F) or above.
- is 1 to 2 years old with a high fever (39.5C/103F) lasting more than 24 hours.
- is any age with a temperature of 40C/104 F or higher.
You should also seek medical advice if your child has other signs of being unwell, such as persistent vomiting, refusal to feed, floppiness, drowsiness and rashes.
