1.  Keep a first aid kit in your home and in your car. In an emergency and you are not around, your children should know it’s location in order to inform an adult or helper.

2. Take a first aid kit with you on hikes, camping trips etc or know where you can find one. This also goes for your children if they are not with you or are in a group outing.

5.  When you get a first aid kit, make sure it has all the items you may need. The contents should match your need. For instance, the requirements of a first aid kit is different for a daycare, factory site and office suite.

6.  Include any personal items such as medications and emergency phone numbers or other items your health-care provider may suggest. This is necessary especially in the home or travel kits in your car.

7.  Check the kit regularly. Is anything missing? Was something used up and not replaced?

8.   Make sure the flashlight works. This is so important as the light from it will enable you to assess the situation e.g. bleeding, fracture, splinters, foreign objects etc.

9.  Check expiration dates and replace any used or out-of-date contents.

10. Store in a dark, cool and dry place. The shelf life of medicines decreases if kept in a humid place. Hence, avoid keeping your first-aid kit in bathrooms or places that are humid or moist. Medicines also need to be kept away from direct sunlight.
