Help a victim

We know that you will never like to see another human being hurt – whether child or adult. However, to help someone, you must have the right knowledge and skills and should do no further harm to the victim.

Apart from the above, there are a few things you must ensure before you proceed with your help:

You must seek consent from the victim:

Understand that only the owner of the body has a right to it so you must ask permission before you do anything. If the person is conscious, just introduce yourself and telling them what you are about to do and they usually won’t say no; this is giving you consent.

If they are unconscious, consent is implied; this means that you assume the person is rational and would want you to help them stay alive.

Help within the limit of your training or knowledge:

This means that if you are trained in first aid, help with only the skills you have learnt and you are confident to perform. No matter how well-intentioned you are, if you do not do the right thing, you might be penalized.

A victim has a right to refuse your help.

We all have different upbringings, exposures and understanding of the right help to give in a particular situation. This means you might be doing the best thing to help the victim but they or their relatives won’t want you to continue. It is their right to refuse.

What do you think of the above? Does it make sens to you? If you have questions or comments, put it in the comment section.
